TMJ Q & A

What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder occurs when the upper and lower jaws don't meet properly, usually due to a misalignment of the teeth. The temporomandibular joints are the joints where the upper and lower jaws meet. These joints work in unison to help you speak, chew, yawn, sneeze – even whistle. The joints include the upper skull bone and the lower jaw bone; in between these bones is a cushion, or disc, that allows the joint to function smoothly and without discomfort. In TMJ disorder, the upper and lower jaws do not meet properly, which causes a lot of stress and strain on the joints. Over time, this repeated strain can cause significant jaw discomfort and even persistent headaches. People with TMJ also often complain of a clicking noise when the chew or yawn, and sometimes even when speaking.

What causes TMJ disorder?

Most people who have TMJ disorder have a growth asymmetry that occurs during childhood, which enables the lower jaw to move out of alignment with the upper jaw. Another frequent cause is persistent grinding or clenching due to stress, although these may also occur as symptoms of TMJ disorder. Trauma and tooth loss can also cause TMJ disorder, as can osteoarthritis.

How can TMJ disorder be treated?

There are a couple of approaches to treating TMJ disorder. One involves using orthodontia with or without crowns, bridges or other devices to help realign the jaws so they meet properly, relieving the strain on the jaw joints. A second approach uses mouth guards worn for a specified period of time during the day or night as prescribed by the dentist. These guards can help cushion the joint and reduce pressure and strain. Beverly Grove Dentistry will discuss all available options during your evaluation and consultation.
