Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a special appliance that's used to span the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Bridges typically include one or more false teeth connected to a strong framework which is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. When neighboring teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge, crowns, or caps, can be used to provide added support for attachment. Bridges use teeth made of porcelain, resins or other materials tinted to match neighboring teeth to create a natural-looking appearance.

What is the bridge procedure like?

Bridge placement requires more than one visit; the exact number of visits depends on whether or not you need to have crowns placed on the neighboring teeth. Once the crowns are in place, Beverly Grove Dentistry will make an impression of your teeth to determine how the bridge should be shaped for a precise and comfortable fit. After the bridge has been made, it will be attached to the crowns and may require minor shaping to ensure the best fit possible.

Do bridges require special care?

You can care for your bridgework the same way you care for your other teeth – with regular brushing to help dislodge food particles and keep the area clean. Depending on how the bridge is placed, you may not be able to floss between the teeth that are attached to the bridge. A water pick or other device may be helpful in keeping the area on either side of your bridge free of food particles and bacteria. See your dentist for regular checkups to ensure the teeth and gums around your bridge stay healthy.

How long does a bridge normally last?

Bridges are designed to be very strong; with proper care, your bridge could last for 15 years or more.
